According to a report from Bild (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), Borussia Dortmund star center-back Nico Schlotterbeck could be at risk for the rest of the World Cup. The defender’s tournament future will be decided today, but it is not looking promising.
Schlotterbeck will get an MRI to assess the damage he suffered vs. Ivory Coast on Saturday:
Nico Schlotterbeck flew back with the team alongside his wife Sabrina to the base camp in Winston-Salem. A decision on whether he will continue in the tournament will be made today following an MRI scan. Schlotterbeck twisted his ankle after 13 minutes against Côte d’Ivoire. He played on with a painkiller until halftime, then asked to be substituted.
Per Bild, the outlook is not good based on what doctors at the stadium saw:
After initial examination in the stadium yesterday, the national team doctors strongly suspect that Nico Schlotterbeck has torn a ligament in his ankle. An MRI scan at the team’s base in Winston-Salem today will provide a definitive diagnosis. If the suspicion is confirmed, the World Cup could be over for the defender [@BILD]
Losing Schlotterbeck would be a massive hit to the Germany backline, which has not been a staple of stability so far in the World Cup. Hopefully the defender will get good news, but things do not look promising.
